Check out the Rest (Jan-2022)

I am ridiculously far behind on posting stuff, but I refuse to let this little thing I do die, so here is the rest of the COMC package I received like 2 weeks ago. One of my top 5 pick-ups of 2021, Sandy Alomar, Jr. has been in a ton of these Topps Archives Buyback releases, but I finally spotted one that featured one of his few Rockies cards. I paid $20 for this serial number 3/4 and was very happy to do so.

Comc Order: The Rest

 

Most of the rest of the COMC order, I managed to squeeze one more upcoming post out of the this, starting with the last two standard Redskins cards I needed of Brad Edwards, just a McDonalds Gameday, Police issue and a couple parallels from 1997 Pacific with the Falcons. These two were not the hardest to find, just happened to be the last two to find there way here.

These scans have dust on them.

Sometimes I tell myself I am super organized, sometimes I put files in folder to keep them straight, and then totally forget about them for months. This is the case here with a package from oldest friend of the blog, Mr. Buckstorecards. As always a nice stack of cards with too many to scan them all, but a few highlights made it to the scanner, starting with a straight black patch of David Krejci and a very rare brand for me, Ray Bourque from The Cup.

My kind of Diamond Rings

It hard to believe it's almost 10 year since the Bruins last won the cup, and just as hard to believe that I haven;t picked up more of these cards. This recent lot of 2 brings me up to an unimpressive 4. Gregory Campbell was one of those players that don't show up on the statsheet, but was huge in the Bruins Playoff runs, most famously breaking his leg blocking a shot, then finishing the penalty kill against the Penguins in 2013.

Recent Hockey Pick-ups

I don't buy a ton of hockey anymore, but playoff fever struck and I bit on a few things from different places. They are all thrown together in favor of three smaller posts. The first from the Bay. High on the list of my hockey interests are Pelle Lindbergh and acetate, so when this card came out in the new Upper Deck Ice offering, I watched around and found one cheap from a Canadian seller meaning low shipping and the card came direct to me instead of through a mail forwarding service, so win-win. It didn't scan well (old scanner), but the clear section has a little holographic thing, very cool card.

LCS Trip with a Nice Pull

The standard LCS trip for one-touches and a sampling of packs, spreading it around to a couple sports, a jumbo pack of Bowman Draft, a couple packs of Upper Deck Full Forse Hockey and some Panini Complete Basketball.

Acetate Appreciation: 2011-12 UD Black Diamond Bruins Championship Rings

Just in time for the start of the NHL season, a card from a set that I have wanted since they came out. I think these Stanley Cup Championship Rings were one per case in 2011-12 Upper Deck Black Diamond and were always out of my price range when I did see them. Then a random search on the Bay turn this up, from a Canadian seller for about $10 shipped. It more than I wanted to spend on a Shawn Thornton card, but impulse got the better of me and I hit buy it now.

Acetate Appreciation: 2001-02 UD Ice Hockey

One of my favorite modern hockey sets, Ice was released by Upper Deck starting in 1996, with 2001-02 being my favorite. The 151 card base set does a nice job of showing of the clear features of the card, while not losing the basic card info with stats and player details.

That might have been the craziest ending to a series I have ever seen. Things looked pretty grim after Boston lost games 5 & 6 and were down 4-1 with 10 minutes left in the 3rd period of game 7. In all honesty I was just hanging on to watch the last 10 minutes of hockey that I really cared about this season, even Horton's goal to make it 4-2 did little to make me feel better, but after Lucic scored to make it 4-3 you could almost feel it, it was gonna happen, and it did. You knew that after the 3rd period collapse, that Toronto wasn't gonna score in OT. Seeing Lucic step up and put the team on his back was huge, and it seemed like he knew that if they lost this game he was probably gonna be moved in the offseason. In overtime Seguin finally stepped up and got his first point of the series on the final goal. Little needs to be said of Patrice Bergeron, Chara might be the captain but to me Bergeron is the face of the Bruins, and who better than to score the winning goal and give this Bruins fan a few more games to yell, cheer and swear loudly at the television.

Acetate Appreciation: 1995-96 Pinnacle Clear Shots

In honor of the NHL playoffs the first Acetate Appreciation focused on hockey. These were among the first acetate cards in my collection from when I collected mostly hockey as a kid. I was reminded of this set after finding the Doug Gilmour in a box of cards and found the Neely on COMC. Hockey seems to have embraced the clear cards more than any sport with Upper Deck seeming to lead the way. Not a ton to say on this one, nice simple design, well done set, Pinnacle is still one of my favorite brands from the card explosion of the 90's.
