Not-So Brief History of Modern Washington Kickers, Part II

Now that 2021 is in the books for the old Football Team and the new name is on the way, I present Part Two of the Not-So Brief History of Modern Washington Kickers. Part One is here.

Billy Cundiff: 2012, 5 Games
Replaced: Graham Gano 
Replaced by: Kai Forbath

 Billy Cundiff was signed to start the 2012 season, but only lasted 5 games going 7-12 including a 1-4 game in a 24-22 win over Tampa Bay. His Redskins stop was only a small part of his 136 game NFL career which included a Pro Bowl and 1st Team All Pro in 2010, 3  NFC Special Teams player of the Week awards, and a record tying 7 field goal night on Monday Night Football.

Not-So Brief History of Modern Washington Kickers, Part I.

Kicking is weird. Kickers are weird. High stress, high leverage and low usage. Finding one that can consistently deal with everything involved is not easy, as a Redskins fan, this has been pretty evident since a guy named Chip was cut in 1995. Brett Conway: 1998-2002, 41 Games
Replaced: Cary Blanchard, Eddie Murray

Replaced by: Michael Husted, James Tuthill

Brett Conway begins the fun and games, brought in for the last 6 games of 1998 as a kick-off specialist (that's right, we carried 2 kickers for 6 games) while Cary Blanchard did the rest of the kicking, earned the job as the sole kicker in 1999, but was then cut after 2 games in 2000 with an injury settlement. Conway would come back that season and kick for the Jets & Raiders, then would return to the Redskins for the entire 2001 season, but would get hurt again after 1 game in 2002

009 -  1995 Stadium Club - George Koonce

I love Linebacker ready to strike pre-snap pics, I also love these gross Green Bay throwbacks. While I am loving things, I love that this completes the first page in the binder of the physical Frankenset.

039 - 1995 Score - Ron Moore
Is it a Jets card or a Cardinals card, either way it is a rare photo of the Cardinals white version of the 1994 throwback unis. I am totally a fan of the small front number in the upper right.

063 - 1995 Upper Deck - Ethan Horton
More 1994 throwbacks, lots of Redskins, lots of 1995 Upper Deck, get used to it.

117 - 2003 Upper Deck - Champ Bailey
Keeping with the throwback Skins theme, this time from 2002, the beloved "spear helmet" throwbacks that I would love to see make a comeback at some point.

126 - 1991 Pro Set - Bill Belichick
I miss coach cards, also a jacket so sweet he couldn't stand to cut the sleeves off.

144 - 1988 Topps - Brian Bosworth
"The Boz", a lot of hype and not a lot of production from the Super Rookie, partly in thanks Bo Jackson knowing a thing or two about running over linebackers.

278 - 1990 Fleer - Lomas Brown
I think the first pack of football cards I ever opened was from 1990 Fleer, so I have a soft spot for it. Also a great O-Lineman card with the tinted visor (zip tie sighting) and the crazy plastic facemask.

311 - 1991 Pacific - Greg McMurtry
I really, really love great special teams photo like this one.

354 - 1989 Pro Set - Rod Woodson
Rookie card of a Hall of Famer, for no reason other than I like Rod Woodson and I like Pro Set. Potential defensive player with the ball card, put he returned a lot of kick in his day, so it's kind of cheating.

374 - 2003 Upper Deck MVP - Taylor Jacobs
A pre-color rush rarity, the Redskins never wore the All-Ketchup getup until 2008, this was just an oddity from a rookie photo-shoot.

486 - 1991 Score - Dean Biasucci
1991 Score is another low-key great set from the junkiest of junk wax era. Triple exposure shot of a kicker, sign me up.

#3 - 2015 Upper Deck CFL - Weston Dressler

The Saskatchewan Roughriders version of the CFL's bizarre Signature Jersey experiment from 2014 and 2015. Mini wheat sheathes on the helmet, shoulders and numbers make this a weird one that thankfully didn't last very long.

First Trade (and post) of 2020

A couple things to get out of the way, happy 2020 to everyone and in absence of a big post I just want to thank everyone who reads, trades and sends cards, not everything gets posted here, but everything is appreciated, thanks to all.

One to the cards, starting with my love of re-printed cards, there is something I just don't like about putting old cards into team binders, so when I can add modern cards of old players I am a happy camper. These are both beauties (the Leach I actually have the vintage card) from 2001 Archives.

029 - 1998 Skybox Premium - Dwayne Rudd

There have been some tough choices so far, this was not one of them, I really doubt anything will displace Dwayne Rudd with an actual Vikings helmet.

Something I Vowed Not Do (Ghost of Zistle forgive me)

(alternate post title "I Sold My Soul For Baseball Cards)

It has been a long time, 3 years or so, since the Beckett takeover and death knell of Zistle, (for some reason the lights are still on over there and some brave souls are still adding content, although nothing newer than 2017). I wrote a long post about that, so I won't go over it again other than Zistle was awesome, it was killed for no good reason (the reason being a larger company killing a smaller competing company instead of trying to improve themselves), and nothing that exists now is even close to as clean, elegant and user friendly. So began my boycott of Beckett. It wasn't really hard, their website is garbage and there are enough checklist sites that info is pretty easy to find without them. But one thing brought me back, 2011 Gypsy Queen mini photo variations. They were bought through the marketplace, so I imagine Beckett gets a taste, but I couldn't help myself. The above 3 put me at 30/100 of my favorite set I will never finish.

A Couple Football Trades

A couple smaller trades merged into one post. The obvious highlight is the above, I am thrilled any time I can add a new Sean Taylor in a trade, this is the Topps Collection gold foil version that I believe was released as a complete factory set.

PWE from TCDB

A rare PWE trade, only 4 cards, but some stuff I am pretty happy to get. Starting with this 2015 Update J.T. Realmuto. This is his first base Topps cards, but no Rookie Card logo. COMC lists this as his rookie card, but he did have a Panini/Donruss card in 2014 with a RC logo, weird that Topps would acknowledge the Panini rookie and leave the logo off this, makes for an interesting card.

Redskins Heavy Trade

Baseball is in full swing, but I always love adding new Redskins and crossing names off the One of Every Redskins lists. Mr. Armentrout (great name) from The Collective Mind blog and I swapped some Redskins, starting with two vintage Skins from 1964 Philadelphia, you will probably never see Kicker-Guard listed as a position on a modern card.

Zistle Trade #62

A really cool zistle trade starting with a really cool Darren Daulton Slideshow insert from 1994 Leaf. Not really an acetate card, but the picture is like a piece of film, hence Slideshow, making for something different and a really interesting card to have in-hand.

May 2016 Pick-ups Feat. Trippy Parallels.

I have to admit, I am still not a fan of the logo-less Panini stuff, but when they put out something like the above Tie-dyed parallel, they deserve to get some credit. I don't know if Prizm will return for 2016, but if it does, I hope these show up again.

A Football trade in Football Season

My second straight football focused trade, again mostly Redskins, starting off with one of my favorite players, Brad Edwards, from one of my favorite sets, 1992 Pinnacle. As much as I like the 1992 design, I was really lacking in the football output from that year.

COMRedskins

Working my way through a large boc from COMC.com that also included a pile of mailbox service cards. Starting with Sean Taylor, I try to add a Taylor card whenever I can, this one numbered to 150 from 2005 Leaf Certified Materials, a set that really suffered from parallel overload.

Recent Football Pick-ups

Another edition of "cleaning out the scanned cards folder", this time showing off some Redskins. First up is kicker Graham Gano from 2011 Panini Adrenalyn XL. Gano was the Redskins kicker for two full seasons and has been with the Panthers the past two seasons. You just don't see kickers on cards anymore, From what I can find, this card from 2011 is the most recent Redskins kicker on a card, and the first kicker to appear on a card by themselves since Eddie Murray in 1995.
