Clearing out the Scan Folder

 Some recent additions I have wanted to post, starting with a rare purchase from everyone's favorite auction site, I have been trying to track one of these down as I believe it is the only cardboard evidence of the Bruins 2019 Winter Classic Uniform that was work after the Classic, notice the lack of a Shamrock patch on the shoulder and obviously the date. I'm a laundry guy as you can see here. 

Check out my Commanders???

The first COMC package of the year with some members of the franchise possibly to be know as the Commanders? Starting with a Boston Redskin, and the newest, oldest card in my collection, Pug Rentner from 1935 National Chicle. Pretty good score for $22 bucks, and a check of the "One of Every Redskin/WFT/???" project.

TCDB Trade: The Team That Shall Not Be Named

 

Just kidding. Redskins. Redskins, Redskins, Redskins. This trade is all cards of the football team that is named the Redskins. Redskins. Now that is out of the way, you ever find a card that you think "There is no way I don't have that card", then find out you don't. The above fits into that, "The Posse" as they were called, pretty crazy for that era to have 3 receivers all surpass 1000 yards in the same season.

Retro Team Collecting Trade

A couple things I know about myself as a collector, I am team collector, and I don't really like vintage. As a Rockies collector, that is fine, 1993 is as far back as you have to go, but as a Redskins collector, you can go back to 1932 for a couple, starting at 1948 for real team sets. That is why I love this set. 1994 Topps Archives includes both the complete 1956 & 1957 sets, the first two NFL Topps sets, along with gold parallels of all the card. Where else is an obsessive team collector going to pick up a modern card of Leon Heath?

My first COMC package of 2020, almost a years worth of cards, which turned out to be a relatively small amount. Starting with 2 more 2018 Spectra Alex Smith cards giving me 7 out of 12 in hand, with a couple more on the way.

Check Out My Redskins (July 2019)

By far, my most exciting packages are from COMC. Months of collecting all wrapped into one big parcel to open, scan and sort. I have been going for quality over quantity, so not a lot in terms of volume but some really nice stuff, including the 2 above Super Bowl Signatures. These two of Gary Clark and Darrell Green put me up to 5 out of 8 Redskins, with the search continuing for Charles Mann (a cheap one at at least), Joe Theismann and John Riggins.

Just a few from COMC

Probably the smallest COMC order I have made, just like the last one, there were a few cards I could not wait to get in hand. Included in that is the above Josh Norman, my first football non-printing plate 1/1. I instantly liked XR last year and have been working on the rainbow since release, while this Black parallel recently surfaced, I still am on the hunt for the Green #/5.

3 From The 'Bay (aka Joy of a Completed Set)

IT'S DONE! Time to take a big black sharpie, cross off the short prints and toss the 2015 Gypsy Queen wantlist in the bin. A rare 'bay seller with reasonable shipping to Canada and a Hoyt Wilhelm in stock crosses the last one off and finishes the Gypsy Queen run from 2011-2016. 

Cards from Burbank

I sure most of you have seen Burbank Sportscards around the trading card marketplace. They recently listed some stuff I was interested in so I placed an order. It came fast, was well packed and shipping to Canada was very reasonable which gets very high marks from me. On to the cards.

Three more 2011 Gypsy Queen mini photo variations, these bring me up to 24 out of 100.

Check Out Everything Else

I already went through the Basketball and Rockies card, so here is the rest out of the scan folder. If you are will to put some serious time in trading you can get some decent card from the Upper Deck e-pack program, this Tokarski is the Gold version, I really don't want to do the math, but 10 Base = 1 Blue, 5 Blue = 1 Red, 5 Red = 1 Gold.

2016 Black Friday Redskins

My excitement in posting Redskins cards is not that high with their season over, but they honestly would not have won a playoff game anyway. Also disappointing is that the totally inept, completely confused and in WAY over his head Jay Gruden will be back despite not getting him team ready for big games, having zero clue in regards to clock management, questionable play calling, especially in the red-zone.

In my search for Fleer Brilliants parallel, I stumbled across the above Trent Green and pulled the trigger, I feel like even though I paid more than I would have like for a single card, I still got a good deal. Green had a very weird career, drafted by the Chargers in 1993, went to the CFL in 1994, signed with the Redskins in 1995 and served as the third stringer behind Gus Frerotte and Heath Shuler before getting to play in 1998, throwing for over 3000 yards and 23 touchdown, then signing a big deal with the Rams, who trade him to the Chiefs the next year, where he would made to Pro-Bowls.

An Endangered Species (AKA Zistle Trade)

Taking a break from moping and pouting about my favorite website to post a trade with one of the few die-hards left lurking around. I have a ton of cards that scans just don't do justice, but this is the opposite, they actually look better scanned than in-hand. Not true acetate cards, only the cloudy window is see through, but very cool cards, and the complete team set of 1997 E-X2000.

Acetate Appreciation: 2004 Playoff Contenders - Rookie Round Up

About as far from football season as you can get, but I had to show this card off. I didn't even know this card existed until I saw it on comc, and a quick quick to the back view confirmed it was an acetate card of Sean Taylor, who is still the last player I would call my favorite Redskin.

Not the best use of the acetate format as the back is just a mirror of the front, but a clear card, numbered to 375 from Taylor's rookie season still wearing #36. This one ranks pretty high up in the collection.

Redskins Pickups in Honor of NFC East Champs

Wow, no one was more surprised by the Redskins winning the division than Redskins fans. Yeah, it was a terrible division, but it still counts. The incredibly young O-Line played well, Jordan Reed stayed healthy and Kirk Cousins stopped throwing interceptions for now. The above Jordan Reed is from 2013 Elite, a really nice acetate card that is pretty much all clear other than the photo, a card I have had for a while but never scanned until now. With one game left Reed has 83 catches for 907 yards and 11 touchdowns, one of the best years ever for a Redskins Tight End.

COMRedskins

Working my way through a large boc from COMC.com that also included a pile of mailbox service cards. Starting with Sean Taylor, I try to add a Taylor card whenever I can, this one numbered to 150 from 2005 Leaf Certified Materials, a set that really suffered from parallel overload.

My Black Friday COMC Rundown

While I definitely did not go overboard this year, I picked up a few cool things worthy of showing off. Starting with a card bought a few days before, a 2008 Upper Deck Masterpieces Chris Cooley, while not a fan of relics, I was sold on this card mostly because of the "21" Sean Taylor patch on the photo and Cooley being one of the last Redskins I actually liked from when the team was just not very good, and not the hot stinking dumpster fire it is now.

Acetate Appreciation: 1996 CE President's Reserve NFL

President's Reverse was a product put out by Collector's Edge, a company that focused mainly on NFL cards during the 1990's. 1996 would be the only year a President's Reverse line was released and it really is a pretty forgettable set. The design doesn't use the clear portion well and the photo is not the sharpest which is a problem with most acetate cards. The entire 400 card base set is acetate with each card listed as being "1 of 20,000". Not a set I like very much, but it is an excuse to post a card of a punter, not something you see very often anymore.

Acetate Appreciation: 2013 Momentum NFL Clear Cut

Panini seems to have embraced acetate this season with inserts in the Prestige product and now clear parallels of the entire Momentum set. These have been a little out of my price range and have been slow in showing up so I cheated by stealing some scans off the Bay. The "Clear Cut" checklist is the same as the base set, but the card design and photos are different. From first glance these cards are very nice, I love the faded logo behind the player photo and the design is nice and simple, with the base "non-rookie" cards being the better of the two in my eyes. The rookie design is very similar to the 1999 Playoff Momentum SSD acetate set that I will be posting about next week. I will definitely be trying to track some of these down.

Acetate Appreciation: 2000 Fleer Focus Star Studded

A football themed post in honor of the NFL pre-season starting, an acetate die-cut "Star Studded" insert from the 2000 Fleer Focus line. A thick black border outlines the stained glass window look of the card. Not a terrible looking card, but the die cutting makes it looks weird in a page and the player name on the left looks like it was an afterthought in the design.

Acetate Appreciation: 2000 Bowman's Best NFL

Expanding the Acetate Appreciation series into football cards, 2000 Bowman's Best was a 150 card set on regular cardboard stock set, but the complete set was paralleled with acetate. Serial numbered to 250 and seeded at a rate of 1 in 22 packs, or roughly one per box, the parallels featured the same design as the base set with the background clear. It's a pretty nice design on the front of the card, but the back of the card has a lot of wasted space on the player cutout.
